Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) and eBay have partnered to launch CGC Expert Review, a low-cost service that provides a preliminary review of comic books by CGC experts. The service is available for collectibles on eBay that have not been certified by a third-party grading service.

To use this service, eBay buyers should look for the CGC Expert Review link near the bid or buy section on the eBay listing page for an uncertified collectible.

CGC is the world's largest and most trusted third-party grading service for comics, magazines, concert posters and related collectibles with more than 5 million collectibles certified since 2000. It is an approved grading company of eBay, a leading online marketplace that connects buyers and sellers around the world.

CGC Expert Review offers two services on eBay:

  • Authenticity Review ($5 per collectible): A CGC expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the collectible's authenticity. The preliminary opinions of authenticity are: Likely Genuine, Likely Not Genuine or Inconclusive.
  • Authenticity and Grade Review ($10 per collectible): A CGC expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the item’s authenticity and, if it is Likely Genuine, a preliminary opinion on its grade range. The preliminary opinions of grade range include Likely 8.0-10.0, Likely 6.0-8.0, Likely 4.0-6.0, Likely 2.0-4.0, Likely 0.5-2.0, Likely No Grade, Likely Individual Page, Likely Cover and Inconclusive.

The Authenticity and Grade Review service also comes with a free preliminary opinion of a collectible’s CGC label type: Likely Universal (Blue Label), Likely Qualified (Green Label), Likely Restored (Purple Label) and Inconclusive.

CGC will provide the results within two business days. An authenticity opinion of Inconclusive will result in a full refund. A grade of Inconclusive will result in a $5 refund.

To use this service, eBay buyers should look for the CGC Expert Review link near the bid or buy section on the eBay listing page for an uncertified collectible.

As an added benefit, CGC will give the person who purchased the CGC Expert Review service a voucher toward CGC’s full authentication, grading and encapsulation services. The voucher is equal to the amount paid for the review and is valid for 90 days from the date the CGC Expert Review service was purchased. An Associate or higher CGC Collector membership is required to submit collectibles to CGC for its regular grading services.

“We want every eBay buyer to have confidence that the comic book they are purchasing is what they believe it to be, and we are able to reinforce that peace of mind in partnership with CGC,” said Mark Flaa, Category Director of Arts & Collectibles at eBay. “This new service is another step in eBay’s efforts to ensure the integrity of the items we offer. Our trusted marketplace and wide selection of inventory, coupled with CGC’s expertise, makes eBay the ideal destination for those searching for authentic, rare collectibles.”

“We are honored to work with eBay to help make it safer, easier and more educational to buy comics in its marketplace,” said Mark Salzberg, Chairman of CGC. “This is a great example of how CGC has leveraged technology to launch a new service that benefits the hobby.”
