Published by Marvel Comics in 1963, this comic features the first appearance of Iron Man by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. In the comic, weapons manufacturer Tony Stark is injured and captured in Vietnam. He secretly creates an iron suit to help him escape and become Iron Man. The scene was famously adapted for the Iron Man film, which began the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008. Iron Man was a founding member of the Avengers in 1963 and continued to appear in Tales of Suspense until the series shifted its attention to Captain America in 1968, when Iron Man began his own comic book series.

Another example of Tales of Suspense #39, graded CGC 8.0, was also sold in this auction for $33,221.
