Double Down! Two Examples of Detective Comics #27 Certified by CGC Each Realize Six Figures in Heritage Sale
Posted on 02/12/2024
Two examples of the book that introduced Batman to the world each realized more than $200,000 in a recent auction. They were the top highlights among more than 600 rare comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) that were presented in Heritage Auctions’ Comic and Comic Art Signature Auction on November 21-24, 2024.
A Detective Comics #27 graded CGC .5 (lot 91059) realized $312,000 while a Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 5.0 Restored (lot 91005) realized $228,000. First published in 1939, this iconic grail features the first appearance of the Batman character, which was an attempt to mimic the success of Action Comics' Superman. The new superhero was embraced by comic book fans, leading to the Caped Crusader's own solo series in 1940.
Buyers must have had bat-fever, because several other Batman-related comics that are certified by CGC also realized six figures in the auction. They included a Detective Comics #31 graded CGC 4.0 (lot 91007 for $174,000), a Batman #11 graded CGC 9.4 (lot 91003 for $132,000), a Detective Comics #29 graded CGC 6.5 (lot 91006 for $120,000) and a Batman #1 graded CGC 1.5 (lot 91035 for $108,000).
