Posted on 25/06/2024

The auction on July 30-31 also includes the first appearance of Captain America.

Some of Marvel and DC’s most iconic Golden Age moments are among more than 400 comics that are certified by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) and included in Hake’s Premier Auction #241. Bidding opens on July 9, 2024, and the auction closes on July 30-31.

Among the highlights of this auction is a complete set of Superman (Vol. 1) issues #1-100, including a Superman #1 graded CGC .5 and a Superman #2 graded CGC 3.5. The first 100 issues are particularly significant for introducing foundational elements of the Superman mythos. Issue #1 told the origin story of Superman, and introduced his adoptive Earth parents, Ma and Pa Kent. Issue #7 is the first appearance of Daily Planet Editor Perry White, who first appeared on the Superman radio program. Issue #17 offered the first prototype of the Fortress of Solitude. Issue #30 is the first appearance of Mr. Mxyzptlk and the first time Superman flies (previously he could only leap). Issue #76 is the first Batman crossover in a Superman title, and they learn each other’s secret identities.

Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the cover featuring Captain America delivering a punch to Adolf Hitler became an iconic image, reflecting the burgeoning patriotic fervor in the United States prior to its entry into World War II. This issue also introduced key characters such as Bucky Barnes, Cap's loyal sidekick, and the villainous Red Skull.
