CGC-graded Superman #1 Fetches $517,500 in ComicConnect Auction

Posted on 20/12/2022

Four comics graded by CGC each realized six figures in the December auction.

Four classic comic books graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), featuring some of the most iconic heroes in comics, sold for six figures each in a December ComicConnect auction. They included one that sold for over half a million dollars.

At the top was a Superman #1 graded CGC 4.5 that realized $517,500. Superman #1 is the very first comic book devoted to one single superhero. It was published by DC Comics in 1939, collecting the first four issues of his debut in Action Comics. This title currently holds the record for most valuable comic, after a CGC 8.0 copy sold for $5.3 million in January 2022.

Another strong finisher was a Marvel Comics #1 graded CGC 2.5 that realized $293,250. Released in November of 1939, this comic includes the first appearance of the Human Torch (not to be confused with the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four, who would arrive much later). This issue also includes the first appearance of Ka-Zar, Angel, Jungle Terror and Masked Raider, and the origin of Namor the Sub-Mariner. The most valuable copy is a CGC 9.2 that sold for $2.4 million in March of 2022.
